Selective Prepping: A Common Mistake In Family Disaster Readiness

This is a phenomenon common in people new to emergency preparedness but afflicts the more experienced prepper as well. There are many areas of focus with disaster readiness, each of them clamoring for our attention.

Food
Water
Shelter
Medical/first aid
Defense
Education
Alternative energy
Hygiene
Special needs for children, elderly, and pets

The list goes on and on. Naturally, there is no way we can give equal attention to each category or skill set, at least not all at the same time. Therefore there must be some degree of prioritization that comes into play. However, the problem lies in concentrating all or most of our attention on just one aspect and forgetting about the rest.

For example, it sounds like a stereotype but there are indeed "survivalists" out there who have spent several thousands of dollars on firearms and ammunition, yet are relying on perhaps one small box of canned food to see them through a crisis. Make no mistake, guns are indeed cool and "sexy" but I'm sure you see the problem with this plan. Bullets just don't taste that good, no matter how much salt you put on them. It is just as bad to focus on acquiring several pallets of dehydrated food but neglect to stock up on basic medicines and first aid items.

The best survival plans are well-rounded. Obviously unless you are independently wealthy, you need to diversify a bit and this can make it take longer to build up a decent stockpile of supplies. Buy a little at a time and you'll be surprised at how quickly it will all add up in your pantry.

Do something every day to add to your preparedness. One day fill up a few empty and clean 2L soda bottles with water and a couple drops of bleach. The next day, when you go grocery shopping, pick up a few extra cans of vegetables on sale. The day after that, if you have firearms, pick up a box of ammunition.

The idea is to remove the blinders and see the whole picture, rather than just a narrow field of vision. As a family progresses through disaster planning, it is perfectly acceptable to tend toward specialization in some areas. For instance, extensive garden plans will naturally entail acquiring and stockpiling vast amounts of heirloom seeds, garden implements, possibly even bags of soil. However, at the same time, this family should also set aside canned food, bottled water, and medical supplies.

At one time or another, every prepper and survivalist falls into this trap. The trick is to recognize when it happens and work toward getting out of the rut.

Watch Out For Hidden Inflation Costs As Packaging "Shrinks"

So you think that inflation is being held in check and the price of food isn't going up? Think again...

In the February Issue of Consumer Reports, it is being reported that more and more producers are decreasing the size and content of their products, but not the prices you are charged for them. This isn't a new technique for increasing cost without "upping" the price tag.. I can remember when I first noticed that a 5-lb bag of sugar had become 4-lbs, and when fresh pecans, almonds and walnuts began to show up in 12 ounce packages instead of 16 ounces. But now this pricing slight of hand is becoming more prevalent across the board- from the juice that you drink, to the soap that you use to wash your dishes.

What Does This Mean For the Prepper?

While many people generally gauge their purchasing decision by price, most experienced preppers have already learned to focus more closely on package volume or price per ounce. So while the common shoppers may continue to purchase their usual products, it will take some time for them to realize their losses.. which will probably occur when they find themselves making additional trips to the grocery store to replenish their stock of items that used to last a bit longer. It's important to realize that you will see many more of these shell games with commodity prices over time as the producers, manufacturers, distributors, merchandisers and ultimately the stores play their own numbers games to hide the results of inflation. Eventually something will have to give, and prices will go up.

So How Much "Shrinkage" Are We Talking About?

Consumer Reports recent study found packing reductions of up to 20 percent. For example, Ivory dish detergent shrank from its 30 oz. bottle to a new 24 oz. bottle due to increased costs for raw materials, according to a customer service representative. And Häagen Dazs ice cream's 16 oz. container shrank to a 14 oz. container due to the cost of ingredients and facility costs. It was either change the size of the container or raise the price, according to customer service.

Here are some of Consumer Reports findings:

Tropicana orange juice: 64 oz. container is now 59 oz. - a 7.8 percent reduction.

Ivory dish detergent: 30 oz. bottle is now 24 oz. - 20 percent reduction

Kraft American cheese: 24 slice package now holds 22 slices - 8.3 percent reduction

Scott toilet tissue: 115.2 sq. ft. now 104.8 sq. ft. - 9 percent reduction

Chicken of the Sea salmon: 3 oz. can now 2.6 oz. - 13.3 percent reduction

What can consumers do?

Compare multiple products for pricing and size. Not all manufacturers downsize. Minute Maid still sells its orange juice in half-gallons, and Ben & Jerry's packs its ice cream in pints.

Compare unit price. Always look at the pricing sticker on the shelf and review cost per ounce, per quart, per pound, per sheet, etc...

Watch for sales, loss-leader items and coupons. Promotions change, making one size or another cheaper from week to week. Stock up when you find a good sale.

Try store brands when sizes are comparable. House brands are usually 25 to 30 percent cheaper than name brands and are often at least as good.

Buy in bulk. Warehouse clubs may offer low prices on large sizes or multi-packs. But again, check the price per unit and be sure you are getting the best bargain because this is not always a given.

Contact the company and let them know that you do not like these types of deceptive practices. Call the consumer hot line number listed on the packaging when available - and complain. When Consumer Reports asked customer-service representatives why a product had been downsized, they often offered coupons as an apology.

How much food should have a Prepper in their supplies Doomsday?

Prepping for a survival situation, it is not an exact science. The reasons for someone to start prepping for a range of emergencies from natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and floods in things like solar flares, volcanic eruption or even disease pandemic situations. So says there is not only an exact formula for how much of a food supply should have in your emergency stocks of survival.

Before you try and come up with an amount which you must first choose what type of situation are prepping for. If you are prepping for a situation in which it could be without power for a number of days then a survival kit 72 hours would probably be fine. If you think a solar flare can take powerlines, or an EMP that did the same thing then you'd probably want to go with at least one food supply 1 month or more.

After reading this go in the kitchen and assess the amount of food they would if there was no electricity. The freezer and fridge are not counted. You will have what is in a pantry or cupboards. Now consider what elements would need to be cooked to be useful. Although you might have something to cook in a situation without electricity, most people don't.

Now that you've done that, how long do you think that amount of food would last your family? Things like canned foods, packaged foods that might be ready to eat and other staples would be on all that you have left. For most people that is not much really.

Now that you have assessed what would be left you need to think about what you need. Dehydrated or freeze dried should food be ideal? Or having additional, rice or pasta and objects as you have what you need? There are also items such as survival food bars that can be achieved through many situations.

All these thoughts weigh what survival preparations that are before you are in a situation and it is too late. As a general rule I would recommend having at least a 30 days supply of food on hand. For most situations that is longer than the disruption would be so should be okay. If inflation has pushed gas prices up there could be a shortage of food, but in the end it would work more than likely. A one-month food supply can be Bough for about $ 50 to $ 100 dollars. It is a small price to pay to have the security of knowing your family will be safe from most disasters.

You can also purchase 3 months, 6 or 12 month survival rations that would have added insurance should something cause you and your family access to survival mode.

Hopefully this will help you with your planning for survival.

At http://www.doomsday-preppers.com you will find a wide range of products of survival for everyone from urban survival for the hard core emergency prepper. We have gas masks, survival food and much more available. There are also many articles related to survive.

2012 Advanced Home Protection From Looters and Rioters

With 2012 here and a lot of anxiety over civil unrest and chaos, it's important to think about what you will do to keep your home safe if things go south. The last thing you want is fear and anxiety if people start acting crazy after a catastrophe.

Until things get really bad, most people don't want to turn their home into a crazy looking fortress. However, if looting or riots seem to be imminent, knowing some simple techniques that will make your house look unappealing for the crazies will give you some peace of mind.

While some blogs advise you to trash the front yard outside your house to make it look like your home was already ransacked, that is no guarantee that some stragglers might not want to pick over your house again.

Other believe the old fashioned "Looters will be shot" threat spray painted on the garage is the best idea. While that is more effective, It also has the unfortunate side effect of advertising to everyone that you have guns. While that is a given in most areas of the South, that is not always the case. Sometimes you don't want burglars to know which houses they can stake out and break into for guns when you are not home.

A quick, simple and very robust way to discourage anyone from choosing your home is to use something called a "Prepper's Welcome Mat." This is a large piece of plywood with nails sticking up fastened to the porch outside the front door. This will make it almost impossible for anyone to merely walk up to your door and try to kick it in.

The Prepper's Welcome Mat is much better than a simple door barricade alone, because it doesn't just make it hard or impossible to kick the door in. Better, it makes it almost impossible for anyone to even try.

Using this same technique, you can also protect the windows so that nobody is going to choose your house. They'll be able to see from the sidewalk that it will be much better to just keep moving and pick an easier target.

Will these techniques stop a determined mob? No, almost no passive means of defense will do that. However, by slowing them down, you will give yourself more time to either call a friend for help or employ more active means of defense like firearms.

Becoming an Urban Prepper - It Doesn't Take Too Much

With natural disasters and other emergencies that can strike at any time, it's important to be prepared for these. Many times when people think of a prepper or suvivalist, ideas of a lonely man living out in the bush come into mind. Generally the ideas of such a person are considered to be somewhat negative. The reality is that it makes logical sense to have some preparations at home.

Most of us don't have the space or money to have survival locations outside of town. Many live inside an urban environment and think that they need to be out in the wild outdoors to survive. City survival is possible for the average disaster.

The first thing that you need is some food. This doesn't have to be months of food although that is not a bad idea, but 30 days of food will be plenty for most disasters that happen. Be sure to have extra things that you already eat that you enjoy eating stored for such occasion. Also have a way of cooking this food that doesn't depend on your utilities and services.

Next have some extra water. It's important to also have some filtration and purification devices. There are small backpacking devices that can purify enough water for one person for a whole month if need be.

Be sure to keep extra supplies at home for warmth like blankets, radios, medicines, and other things that you might need.

The important thing is to start today and become an urban prepper. Take out any old connotations that you have about someone who is a survivalist and realize that you are only doing this to ensure that you an your family will be fine during disasters.

Custom Paint Jobs - It Does Not Start With the Paint Gun

All of the awesome auto paint colors are what make cars look great and attract interest from car enthusiasts around the world. Ed Roth broke the mold by altering the stock look with modified body parts, pinstripes, and custom paint. Since then people began customizing cars in every way imaginable. This has created a lot of people interested in custom painting. However, the same rule applied then and still applies today, which is, it does not start with the paint gun, it starts with the wash mitt.

As a collision repair instructor, I see the same thing many times when it come to painting a car. Students tend to rush though the preparation stage and then expect superior end results. Painting is an art and it does take practice. Travel speed, distance, spay pattern overlap, and technique is necessary to learn in order to produce professional results, but more attention needs to be concentrated on preparing the car for paint than the spraying itself.

Here is an example that I give my students when I am trying to convey this point. Let's say that we did not properly wash and clean the vehicle. Then we sanded the car, but fast and sloppy. Lastly, we slap a little tape and paper to mask it off. If Chip Foose (very know for his painting abilities) came in and painted the car, how would it turn out? Well, it would have dirt in it as we rushed through the preparation process, probably fish eyes in the paint, paint over spray on the glass and moldings where paint seeped though. Well, I guess you could say it would look horrible. The paint would probably peel later due to a loss of adhesion. All of Foose's abilities are useless if the car is not prepped correctly. This is similar to spending $200,000 dollars building a nice home on top of a bad foundation. Even if you use the best materials to built the house, it will fall apart if the foundation is not right. Therefore, assuring that you have a good foundation is important before building a home, just like having a properly prepped car before painting it.

I know that I stress that point, but it is often overlooked. So get your wash mitt out and spend extra time washing the car before starting repairs. Then take your time and assure all of the surface to be painted is sanded so the top coating will properly adhere. Always re-clean the area to remove all dirt. Dirt in crevices may blow out with the air pressure of the paint gun and get in the paint job, if you do not blow the car off thoroughly before masking it off. Use a good quality paper and masking tape to protect glass the other items that you do not want painted. Wipe the surface with quality wax and grease remover to remove all traces of condemnations, waxes, silicones, etc. Use a tack rag to remove final dirt and lint before applying the paint coatings. Now you can start spraying the car. Spend 80% of your time and efforts becoming a good prepper and 20% of your time perfecting your spraying techniques. This is what it takes to produce custom paint jobs that will look great and turn heads.

Getting Ready For Change - The Suburban Warrior

The people who think that nothing that dramatic will happen are all over the place. Mostly because the human mind is not built to think of "insecure" possibilities. Life is challangeing enough without the need to consider basic survival as well. However, that is precisely what we need to do. We need to be both experts at living our daily lives and experts at formulating what if's scenarios. Is this tricky? Yup. For most it is down right impossible. Nothing in the world could be more confusing than focusing on the future and all the wonderful possibilities and dreams for ourselves and our children and then at the same time having to make a 360 degree turn in mental focus and entertain all of the ugly possibilities. Make no mistake about this. The very foundation of all that is good and functioning is at risk. Let me illustrate.

The typical American Dream. People all over the world chase this dream. Just a new name for dreaming of the future and all its possibilities. We seem to be naturally wired to this thinking. And it makes sense. The natural state of any human being is to want to improve his or her station oin life. Pass all they learn in to "the kids" and watch in awe as our chidren "out do" us in their lives. Kinda like the master laying down to become the bridge for the student. This is life moving forward one family at a time all over the world. Making large changes to the world and its possibilties one family at a time. Where things get tricky is when this very basic "life must move forward" mentality gets side tracked by evil things outside of our control. And while I am a very "we make our own destiny" kinda guy, it is not only silly but irresponsible to think that large country wide swaths of change cannot happen. And have no doubt that powerful people are in a position to see that it gets get bad. For there own reasons. Conspiracy is the topic for other places though. Here at The Next Leap we need to urgently focus on what we can do right now given the reality of the situation we face. Lets begin with a partial list of the various changes happening all around us.

The economy and fractional reserve banking is finished. Any fiat currency has a shelf life of about 80 years. That is the life span of possible exspandtion and contraction of any particular currency and its inflation and de-flation cycles. Not only is the worlds reserve currency finished "on paper" but the system governing global banking "aka" Bretton Woods has seen its last days.

Weather or not this system remains propped up or not you can be assured that we will see DRAMATIC global economic changes. How does this affect you? In all ways possible. Any part of your life that money touches (and has been set up that way) will become areas of major concern. This one suject alone connects back to all other areas of concern at The Next Leap.

Natural Disasters. Did you know that SIGNIFICANT natural disasters have increased in occurrence by nearly 400% since the 1950's? And the economic costs of those disasters have risen about 1400%? Endless speculation as to why this is happening is being debated all over the world. Different groups have different theories and most agree that big changes are occurring. Global Warming? I dont know. It does not matter because it is happening. You will not stop it now so dont worry about the why's.

The Bee colonies all over the world are collapsing. Information on this subject is easy to find if you go looking for it. I serioulsy doubt you will hear about it on the main stream media but lots of information is available in "other" places. Google it. You will be shocked. What does this mean?

Well let me put it this way...Start to grow your own food now. Start to stock pile "long shelf life"

foods and supplies now. Colony collaspe disorder as it is called is a much bigger problem than you are likley aware. I highly recommend getting educated on this one subject alone. What do bees do? They pollunate everything. Our food supply is at risk from this one issue. I do not envy those in the government who have to attempt to deal with this.

The composition of the ice in both the Artic and the Antartic is changing. In the Antartic massive ice feilds the size of small countries are breaking off the ice shelf. In the Artic the over all volume of ice in the dead of winter has been getting smaller. The very ecosystem of the planet will be and has already started to change. Look into it. Educate yourself. Get informed.

My personal favorite is the Sun itself. The sun is undergoing a dramatic cyclical change. Obviously we can't really measure it because humanity is so young, but scientist have been observing some wild things. Remember the Sun makes up 90% of all matter in our solar system.

Again look around a bit.

The Ostrich Syndrome. From my person experience I have observed that most people whom I talk to about these various things simply do not want to "hear it". I am not sure of the true reasons for this other than I suspect over whelming fear. The problem with this is that the more peolpe that do not take responsibility, the heavier the burden will be on those that do.

And that my friends is not fair. I am not convinced that humanity has "destroyed" the planet.

I simply do not know. What I do know is that this is happening. The governments around the world are well aware of it as well. Be certain of that. What contigency plans are the they making? Are you going to wait and see how it goes? I would hope not.

And in the mean time begin training your mind to live in a dual world where on one hand every thing is rosy (because it needs to be) and on the other things are changing very quickly. Start to prepare yourself for taking "dramatic" action when getting ready for the change that is with out any shadow of a doubt coming. [http://the-next-leap.blogspot.com]

We Can Not Rely Upon the Government in a Crisis

When you pick up the morning newspaper or switch on your favorite news channel on the television you are continually bombarded with negative aspects of our country. You see how the economy is being downgraded, you make note of the high unemployment rate, you readily witness homes being lost as the banks foreclose on them and hear of the general civil unrest taking place here in America. This tends to sound alarms within certain groups of people - one faction being the growing cluster of "preppers" around the nation.

"Preppers" are not merely a survival group or a selection of individuals who distrust government motives but everyday people like you and I who realize that our country is heading into some serious predicaments. These people are fed up with the common bureaucracy encountered during and after a disaster, they wonder about the safety of their family in these times of global terrorism and they are simply not sitting still and accepting the status quo. This is a crowd of active and involved people are taking the issues one step further and doing what many expect the government to do.

These growing movements of "Preppers" are doing everything humanly possible in order to ensure that if and when the next disaster should strike our country that they can take care of their families in a responsible manner. It could be a natural disaster or even a dreaded nuclear attack with dangerous fallout, but these guys will be ready. Their philosophy is not to wait for Uncle Sam to help them but rather to be ready to help yourself.

The mounting bands of preppers are trying to think of every possible situation that could occur and plan accordingly for it. They practice various scenarios and store up on sufficient food and supplies to enable them to evacuate their home environment at a moments notice. Once their decision has been reached they will quickly head for safer grounds if necessary. The threat that these folks see is real and is gets closer to our doorstep each and every day.

The idea behind this movement is that we should be prepared to take responsibility for our own actions and safety. It is up to us as both human beings and responsible people to plan for the unfortunate times when the government can not or will not respond. You may be sitting at your computer desk wondering how would I know what is going through the minds of a "prepper" well it just so happens that I am one of these prepared individuals. For the benefit of your family shouldn't you be one as well?

What Does Vince Lombardi Have to Do With Prepping?

The other day a prepper curious friend asked me what kind of gun he should buy. I was excited that he was thinking of taking care of his need to protect himself and his family. The ability and right to protect our persons, family and property come with being human. They are a God-given right, not as some would consider a man-made right.

Before I gave him an answer about weapons, I had to stop and think a bit. (usually I just say something then think later, ask my wife, she'll agree) This time, I asked him a question instead. "Do you have the basics covered?" "Do you have a one year supply of food and water for your family?"

I kind of expected the answer I received, "No, I don't have any food stashed...yet." I didn't want to discourage him about protecting his family but at the same time I feel that FEEDING your family is protecting them also. I gently encouraged him to start thinking about starting his food purchases FIRST, then as money allowed to consider purchasing his weapons.

Psychologist Abraham Maslow developed his theory of Hierarchy of Needs. The basic necessities at bottom of his list of needs are the physiological needs. Breathing, food, water, shelter. Just above that comes security.

So many times we want to get the coolest gadget, radio, solar panel, gun, that we forget about taking care of the basics FIRST. Even though I am constantly ADDING to my already deep larder, I am able to move up and concentrate on security of body, family and property.

The Green Bay Packers' legendary head coach, Vince Lombardi led them to 5 world championships in 7 years including the first two Super Bowls. Although each season, many hardened veterans would return, to the Packers, Coach Lombardi would start with the basics. On the first day of practice each year, Lombardi would hold up a football and say, "Men....this is a football!"

You can't get any more basic than that. So, remember in your quest to prepare your family for uncertainty, start with the basics. Take care of those, then move up.

This link is a really neat little tool that helps calculate just how much food you need for a given amount of people. It is developed by some Mormons. I am not Mormon, but I do respect their deep knowledge and (food) preparedness beliefs.

Are You Worried About Big Brother?

Usually people for some reason or another do not want "Big Brother" or in our case now "Big sister" to know their business. This is particularly relevant when joining or participating in survivalist groups. People out of an effort to preserve their privacy do not want to do things which may possibly draw the government's attention to them. They often avoid some interesting groups and activities as a result of this mindset.

In all reality this secrecy is nothing less than rubbish. If your true interests lied in hiding your identity than you certainly would not be reading this article in the first place. You would be grossly mistaken if you truly believed that you can successfully achieve total privacy from the snooping eyes of the government. If they want to spy on you take my word for it - they will.

Our federal, state and local governments often establish labels and than attach people to those labels. As an example the governments watch list may not list you or I on it by name however they have identified the labels needed to justify their snooping. Within their book you will find mentioned the word, "survivalist" and than the governments clarification of it would follow.

The rightwing extremists which flourishes in America today are logically broken down into various groups ranging from the moderate to the extreme however if you express an interest in weapons, hunting, storage of food supplies or being prepared for any potential emergency you are being placed in the same category. Unfortunately our "Department of Homeland Security" fails to understand the basic principle differentiating our groups from those dangerous right wing radicals.

You and I may look at the situation as ludicrous and deny that these labels fit our philosophy however as sad as it may be the media at large, our government and the public often view us as one and the same.

Rightwing extremism can often be divided into several types of groups or movements which are primarily based upon hate oriented beliefs. These undesirable groups may form their ideals upon a particular religion; they may be racial or ethnic in their fundamentals or even antigovernment in nature. Few people understand that survivalists and preppers are not against our government but merely pro-constitution. We do not hate any particular group nor do we advocate violence to anyone. But once again instead of investigating our beliefs our leaders in power automatically type cast us with extremists.

Although many right-wing organizations express concerns on specific issues that we are interested in as well, we function in a totally different manner. We are both interested in the economy of our country, in gun control legislation and in the seizure of individual power by the federal authorities. This does not mean that we intend harm upon any individual or group. There are proper procedures for these situations. Just this week an Arizona Republican Ms. Gabrielle Giffords was the target of a crazed and senseless shooting. Jared Loughner the accused shooter was in no way representative of survivalists or preppers but merely a hate filled individual. In conclusion, it is up to us how the public perceives us and I for one like to make a favorable appearance. I volunteer for public activities and do not hide the fact that I am a survivalist. I am an emergency actions volunteer for the American Red Cross and participate in various city, county and state activities. We must change how we are viewed by the public and the media or risk being placed in the same light as the accused killer Jared Lee Loughner.
