Becoming an Urban Prepper - It Doesn't Take Too Much

With natural disasters and other emergencies that can strike at any time, it's important to be prepared for these. Many times when people think of a prepper or suvivalist, ideas of a lonely man living out in the bush come into mind. Generally the ideas of such a person are considered to be somewhat negative. The reality is that it makes logical sense to have some preparations at home.

Most of us don't have the space or money to have survival locations outside of town. Many live inside an urban environment and think that they need to be out in the wild outdoors to survive. City survival is possible for the average disaster.

The first thing that you need is some food. This doesn't have to be months of food although that is not a bad idea, but 30 days of food will be plenty for most disasters that happen. Be sure to have extra things that you already eat that you enjoy eating stored for such occasion. Also have a way of cooking this food that doesn't depend on your utilities and services.

Next have some extra water. It's important to also have some filtration and purification devices. There are small backpacking devices that can purify enough water for one person for a whole month if need be.

Be sure to keep extra supplies at home for warmth like blankets, radios, medicines, and other things that you might need.

The important thing is to start today and become an urban prepper. Take out any old connotations that you have about someone who is a survivalist and realize that you are only doing this to ensure that you an your family will be fine during disasters.

Do you have a plan for natural disasters or pandemics?

Click and learn Urban Survival Skills to properly prepare and be ready for these situations.

A 3 Day Pack is a must to have prepared before disaster situations so you can have something to rely upon.

Urban Survival, Economic Collapse and Foraging for Food

With unemployment at a sustained high, the economy in tatters and both the national debt and deficit out of control, more people in the US are feeling insecure about putting food on the table. There is also a growing number of people who call themselves "Preppers" that are storing food and supplies in case our economy collapses and we see hyperinflation and a situation worse than the Great Depression. How will they feed their families? What makes so many people worried is that they don't know much about growing food or preserving or canning or anything beyond going to the grocery store. As a result, Urban Survival skills are becoming more important to more people.

Although more people live in suburbia today than live in an actual "urban" environment, for the purposes of this discussion, "urban survival" refers to anything happening in any size city or suburb that is not rural. These are the population centers where hundreds of millions of people could go hungry if there is any kind of a collapse.

If the store shelves are empty, or your pockets are empty, it doesn't really matter - you and your family face hunger. While there is the possibility in an extreme situation that food banks may still operate, nobody wants to be in a position where their life depends on the charity of others. So how do you put food on the table?

Urban Food Sources

Retention ponds are a gold mine of food. First off, there are almost always ducks or geese there, which can be an instant source of a good meal. While many of the geese are protected by wildlife laws, if there is a breakdown in society, that will matter little compared to feeding your family. The great thing about these fowl is that they are easy to catch. Soaking corn or grain in alcohol and feeding it to them will make them drunk and sluggish and easy to catch, in case post-collapse pursuit of the birds becomes more common and they are easily scared. In other urban environments, there are pigeons as well, which can be caught just as easily.

In addition to fowl, retention ponds offer cattails, which are a very good source of food year round, and not very well known. In the spring, the tender green shoots of cattails can be pulled up and eaten just like thin cucumbers. Later in the year the heads sprout pollen, which can be collected and used as flour. Year round, the roots of the cattails can be collected and processed to make a very nutrient dense flour as well.

Trees bearing fruits and nuts abound in parks and forest preserves, if you know how to identify them. Oak trees drop acorns that can be gathered and processed to make acorn flour, and even crabapple trees that have tiny fruit that is bitter when eaten raw can be used to make jelly that tastes great and provides vital nutrients.

Hunting small game in an urban environment is not recommended, but rabbits and squirrels can easily be trapped using improved snares once you learn how.

Skills To Develop

All of the food sources listed above are plentiful and, at least in the beginning stages after an economic collapse or societal breakdown, they will not be highly sought after. Thus, competition will be sparse and it will be easier for you to forage and ensure your family survives. Developing these urban survival skills is not difficult, as all can be found demonstrated quite well on YouTube, though it requires an investment of time. For families with children, this is a great way to learn more about the environment and a great excuse to turn off the TV and spend some quality time together learning how our ancestors fed themselves.

Urban survival during hyperinflation

More and more people, even those who aren't Preppers, are beginning to fear the effects of America's runaway public debt, stagnant economy and increasing unemployment. As soon as the Government/Federal Reserve start to print money because foreigners will continue to buy our debt and fund our deficit spending, inflation will be set. Just as happened in many other countries, inflation will turn to hyperinflation and economic collapse will result in riots, food shortages and chaos. This is what is called a SHTF (Sh-t hits the fan) scenario and will be for some urban survival skills.

For those who live in rural or suburban areas, the threat of riots seem very remote. However, those who live in an urban environment will no doubt face real life and death struggles as chaos comes from government aid checks that cannot even buy groceries for a week because of hyperinflation. When it comes to people desperate to feed their families, make desperate things.

The lesson from Germany's 20 and 30 ' is that people in cities will also form bands and RAID the rural towns where farmers are accusing these farmers for food shortages in stores. They don't care that farmers cannot afford to buy gas to bring their crops to market in a hyperinflationary environment, where prices rise literally every single day.

In one case, some people also killed the riot police sent to quell a revolt and slaughtered their horses to eat. Houses were cold as fuel shortages and benches disappeared, as did the trees in the city, as people burned everything they could to stay warm.

So if this scenario, or anything even approaching, you may be directed to us, as we prepare?

The most important thing is to begin before the purchase and storage of more non-perishable food-canned goods and dried beans, pasta, and rice. Begin to cook your meals with these basic ingredients to save money, with which you will be able to buy more food and get used to eating these healthy foods, cheaper. A family of four can easily drop $ 20 to McDonalds, or choose to buy a 50 lb bag of rice that feed them for many days.

The second thing to do is have a plan of Defense. This means that from the entire family knowing what to do if you are experiencing civil unrest and never talk to anyone else about food supplies. If you tell someone and talk to someone else and Word gets around, your home will become a target of plunder and the whole family will be in danger. The plan should also include defence firearms or other weapons-Mace defense or even a can of Wasp spray will deter attackers.

Lastly, don't throw away the heavy plastic juice bottles or two-liter soda bottles. Instead, rinse them properly and fill them with water so that you have at least 7 litres of water per person stored-enough for the preparation of food and drink for a week-just in case the utilities are interrupted.

Urban Survival in 2012 - Self Defense

The one thing that all the various 2012 predictions have in common is the impact that it will have on society. All signs point to various forms of civil unrest from localized riots for who-knows-what-reasons to widespread food riots across regions of the country if the supply system breaks down.

With crime increasing dramatically in both the form of civil unrest and undoubtedly personal violent crimes due to economic desperation, it will be more important than ever to know how to keep yourself safe in 2012.

Don't Make Yourself a Target

You can learn a lot from the old adage "The biggest kid on the block gets in the fewest fights" because it makes you realize that if you don't look like a victim, chances are you won't become one. The key is to learn to walk with a purpose in your step, look people straight in the eyes and don't be out in public walking around distracted on your cell phone.

If you are seen as aware and alert, then it is harder for a bad guy to get the drop on you. Have your keys out before you get to your car and approach your car after having walked around it so you know that nobody is waiting behind a van or truck ready to pounce on you.

Know When to Fight and When to Run

The best story I've heard to drive this point home is from a very tough and experienced street fighter named Sal who had someone bump into him in a subway. The stranger had no idea that Sal was a man who could handle himself very well, so he spewed some profanity at him.

Sal's gut told him that this was not worth it, so he apologized to the thug, who he could easily have beaten, and walked away. As he walked away, he saw the thug was then met by two friends. Had Sal made an issue out of it, he would have been fighting three men.

Even a street fight that you win could cost you a couple hundred dollars for stitches at the emergency room. It's almost never worth it.

Know a Couple of Easy Self Defense Techniques

There are times when you can't avoid defending yourself. Either the bad guy is determined to fight you or you are going to be attacked for a thrill or your wallet. Once you are attacked, you have to be able to have an "auto-pilot" that gets switched on so that you defend yourself without thinking.

There is no time to think about which karate move you should make - there is only time to defend yourself. Long before you ever get into a situation of civil unrest or becoming the victim of a crime, you need to learn a couple of simple self-defense techniques that you can employ without thinking.

Urban Survival Techniques We All Need for the Next Great Depression

Mastering a number of Urban Survival Techniques is critical to being able to make it in the tough economic times that are coming to America. The riots and economic issues that we see in Europe are only beginning, are only going to get worse, and are going to show up here on our shores.

Urban Survival Techniques are much less about self-defense and firearms and such, and are rather much more about making it through daily life when we are experiencing the next Great Depression and a collapse of the US Dollar, making all the goods we import much more expensive.

It's important to think of these skills in two sets of categories. The first category simply lists the various skill sets that you will need in the future. The second category defines the skills that you do and don't have. In this article, we'll look at the first category - the broadly defined skill sets that you need to be cultivating for your sake and the sake of your family.

Urban Survival Techniques - Skills Sets

Ensuring a safe supply of drinking water is the first, most critical thing on the list. Whether a tornado or other natural disaster wipes out the water treatment facility or the power grid goes down and you have no water pressure at your faucet, you need water to live. Consider also that the number one cause of death among children in the world is unsafe drinking water, and you get a sobering idea of what it is we take for granted.

Having enough food is the next priority. Since most Americans don't have enough non-perishables on hand to last more than a week, and in a disaster whatever is in your refrigerator or freezer will not last more than two days, we are in a precarious situation. Ask any grocery store manager and you will discover that a 3 day supply of food is the most any store has on hand. This means that unless you want to be a refugee or dependent on the government during a crisis, you had better learn about the proper way to store at least a couple weeks supply of food.

Having a "Plan B" for first aid or medical care in case the hospital or clinic is unavailable is the next priority. We take health care - especially emergency services - for granted. However, if the power grid is down or fuel supplies are interrupted and vehicles stop moving, we need to have a well thought out plan for how we will get the medical attention we may need.

Urban Survival Techniques for 2012 - Realistic Self Defense Without Weapons

As the economic collapse continues to unfold in slow motion and more and more people are thrust into the personal financial hard times of their lives, crime is poised to begin a dramatic increase. This means that urban survival techniques like self-defense are going to be increasingly important as more Americans begin to witness desperate people turning to crime.

You Can't Always Count on Weapons

The realization that crime is about to skyrocket has hit the millions of Americans who have bought guns in the last 12 months. The problem is that most gun owners have their guns at home. Unless you have a lot of training and a permit to carry a concealed firearm, chances are that you will be caught without a gun if you encounter a bad guy.

Pepper spray and stun guns, where allowed by law, are also relied upon by more people than ever before to give them a sense of security. While these are very great forms of non-lethal weapons to save you from an assault, the problem is that most people are assaulted by surprise and don't have a chance to get out their pepper spray or their stun gun until they are already in the clutches of a thug.

You Can't Count on Fancy Martial Arts Training

Many people turn to martial arts training to help them stay safe. While this is great for the dedicated student of martial arts who has devoted a lot of time to learning the craft, often times in a street fight the many fancy martial arts moves that you have to choose from just make you hesitate, wondering which to use.

If we find ourselves in a situation very soon where crime rates skyrocket, there won't be time for martial arts systems to be learned to keep you safe.

A Couple Simple Moves

When you are attacked, your best chance of not getting seriously hurt or killed lies in your ability to quickly react to protect yourself and then 'encourage' your attacker to choose another victim.

That means that a couple simple but effective moves should be learned and rehearsed so that you never are in a position of wondering how you should protect yourself or counterattack.

This jibes perfectly with the training soldiers receive in the US Army. Army training features very simple tasks that are trained repeatedly so that they become a reflex. Soldiers can't hesitate - they have to react instinctively in order to stay alive.

The lesson is clear. Learn a few simple self-defense techniques and rehearse them mentally so that you will be able to react in the critical first seconds of an assault and avoid serious injury or even death.

As crime rates increase due to people driven to desperation due to the economy, this is an urban survival technique that can make a huge difference in your life.

Urban Survival Techniques to Develop Before the Depression of 2012 Hits America

Urban Survival Techniques can be divided into several categories of skills that will be very useful whether we are facing another Great Depression or an even more dramatic economic meltdown. Knowing how to ensure that you and your family have access to safe water, food and medical attention in an emergency is critical to getting by in 2012.

However, it is nearly impossible for one person to master all of the skills that are necessary to thrive in tough times, so it is critical to identify the important skill sets and figure out how you can network with others who possess the skills you lack.

Since 'no man is an island' you will want to have a circle of very trusted friends and family who can complement the urban survival techniques you've mastered. Let's take a look at some of the most important skill sets and ask yourself the following question:

Do I Have These Skills?

Do I Know Someone Who Does?

Water purification. If your city suddenly lost water pressure due to a power grid failure, would you know what to do, aside from fighting the crowds for the last bottled water on the grocery store shelves? Since most people don't know (and no, boiling water is not enough) you need to have access to a good urban survival manual that will take you step-by-step through the process.

Food storage. After the typical American's pantry is empty in a week or maybe two, the time comes for longer term food storage to keep you from being dependent on FEMA (remember how well they cared for victims of Hurricane Katrina?) or charity. Creating an inexpensive long-term food storage supply is an urban survival technique that is a lot better than trying to buy thousands of dollars of freeze-dried foods or Army MRE's.

First Aid. If the hospital loses power or the lines are out the door after a catastrophe, do you have a first aid resource like a nurse or doctor in your neighborhood? Do you have a personally crafted first aid kit and a good first aid manual?

The best time to assess the situation to ensure that your family is protected in these critical areas is well before any crisis hits. Prioritize what skills you have or are natural fits for you to develop and then see who in your circle can be relied on to make up the deficits.

Urban survival is about knowing how you can help others and be a valuable resource and being aware of which are the areas where you will need assistance.

Now click here to learn more about Urban Survival Techniques or here to check out a great Urban Survival Manual.

You'll see that Urban Survival is not all about guns and "survivalists" but also a lot of practical skills that our grandparents relied on.
