Doomsday Preppers Must Include This Essential Element in Their Emergency Preparations

Planning for your own health should generally be at the core of virtually any doomsday preppers' plans. All the food, water, as well as supplies in any part of the world are actually not going to aide you in a catastrophe provided you are not adequately healthy to perform your emergency action plan. People are commonly forced to push theirselves physically immediately after a tragedy due to abrupt challenges and the increased loss of modern-day conveniences. Are you aware that more than seventy thousand Americans wound up with a personal injury warranting a doctors visit in 2008 after shoveling snow.

Moreover, hundreds of those appointments happened to be due to cardiac arrest as reported by the Consumer Products Safety Commission? If this many people are severely injured merely because of shoveling snow, just how many of them could have been competent at running a few miles to refuge or cutting up/lifting rubble for some time. Remaining in good physical condition can give you numerous benefits in emergencies:

Healthy Individuals Tend to Be Less Prone to Health Problems and Medical Conditions

Exercise allows you to decrease the bad cholesterol (LDL) which results in coronary disease and will increase the good cholesterol (HDL) that may protect against heart related illnesses. Doomsday preppers that work out regularly are likely to decrease their risk of serious health issues and infirmities which actually could easily develop to be serious issues in a crisis.

Exercise Enhances Your Overall Strength

Planning for a disaster should always consist of getting ready for the heightened physical demands of an unexpected emergency. The more you engage in physical activity and build your all-around degree of physical fitness at this time, the more you will be able to take on when calamity happens in the future. By building up your endurance and strength through regular physical exercise, you can expect increase your personal autonomy in a disaster.

Bodily Exercise Enhances Your Mind

An individual's mental wellness will sharpen with consistent workouts as well. Physical activity in many cases can be a powerful antidepressant as well as can decrease the symptoms of depression. Maintaining strong mental wellness is imperative during the stressful situations generated in a disaster. Staying nimble physically will most likely help you stay agile mentally, they are both essential to your security in an emergency.

Act by committing to make your health a priority as you plan for a serious event. Start modestly by doing little things like walking around your area to better acquaint yourself with your environment. Create aspirations for yourself based on your current day circumstances and crisis plan. It may be the most significant prepping endeavor you do in your life.

Does Your Family Have an Emergency Plan in Place?

Since the nature of emergencies are that they happen when they happen a good Doomsday Prepper needs to be prepared for many different contingencies.

Obviously most survival preppers will think of the obvious like food, shelter and security but what about actually planning for the emergency itself? What if a train car derailed and it was loaded with potentially letal chemicals and the plume were blowing your way? Your spouse is at work, the kids are at school and all hell breaks loose, or as we like to call it, when the shit hits the fan.

Within minutes of the announcement of the disaster streets are filling with cars, people are ignoring road rules such as which lane to drive in and 4 ways stops. This leads to accidents and issues further snarling traffic. To make things worse you try and contact your family on the phone, but you get the all circuits are busy message.

Luckily you are at home and have access to Gas Masks, plenty of food and all but your spouse and kids are no where near. You have to leave your home because of the safety issues but what about the rest of your family, what are they thinking? Where are they going to try to go?

Quite likely they are trying to get to you and the gear which you are looking to take and leave with.

This is a common scenario that does happen and will happen again. Having a plan in place for these sorts of emergencies can be the difference between life and death. Every family should have plans in place as to what to do in such a scenario.

Maybe have a family members house that is out of town as your meeting location. Maybe it's just an address in the city to get to and leave a message as to a final destination.

The point is everyone in the family needs to know where to meet if they are separated and need to get back with each other. This plan needs to be discussed regularly so when the emergency situation comes up everyone knows where to go and what to do at least.

Creating a survival plan is as easy as having a family discussion and coming up with some locations. You should also plan on who should grab what when the time comes. Also plan for several scenarios. A train derailing would be much different than a terrorist attack or an earthquake.

Take a few minutes to get this done. It might just save your life and the lives of your family members.

Do You Need a Gas Mask in Your Emergency Kit?

If you are like me you have probably seen many doomsday preparation shows on TV and have seen many people with gas and biological filtration devices. I have been asked by a couple visitors if it's something you really need in your survival kit.

Answering that question really depends on what the gas mask is used for. If you were in an emergency where chemical or biological weapons are used then having a gas mask would really be the difference between life and death. If on the other hand there were a swine flu, bird flu or other pandemic that is airborne nose and mouth filters would probably work better.

The gas mask isn't really an item you would be able to wear all the time. It's for a short duration use in an emergency situation. Many don't have any way to drink in them and aren't exactly the most comfortable survival items that you will wear. The paper filter masks can be worn with regularity and not be nearly as cumbersome as a gas mask.

So with that said should you have a gas mask in your survival gear kit? I like to think as a prepper that I try to be prepared for a variety of emergency situations. If I prep for only the super volcano eruption in Wyoming, or a chemical attack I am limiting my readiness.

For about 20-40 dollars you can get a gas mask and be ready for whatever emergency survival situation comes up. I would also make sure to have a supply of paper masks for airborne pathogens in case of the spread of infectious disease. Some of the most popular Gas Masks right now are those that come from Israel as they are constantly updated with new innovations. For most survival situations having a filtration masks of any make is likely to provide survival protection for both you and your family.

Remember as a prepper you need to think about being prepared for many different situations. You will most likely never be able to have all of your bases covered but the more you have covered the more you will be prepared. Learning about emergency survival is the best way to start. The more educated you are on what it would take to survive any emergency whether it be a hurricane, nuclear disaster, wide spread electrical disruption or just a local emergency, the better off you and your family will be.

Do You Have an Emergency Plan For Your Family?

Called "Preppers" on some places on the net, these forward thinking folks are gaining the attention of the main stream media.

I been having a good look around and have found several cases where your "average Joe" has been buying water filtration systems and stock piling food for the last 6 months. In some cases for years already. And they are most definitely not "extremists in any form. In fact they ar so normal looking you would not be able to pick them out of a crowd. If any of this surprises you, I can assure you that it would not surprise anyone in Greece or Ireland. Have a look at some of the news head lines from just the past month from Europe.

The fact that our media here in North America talks about NOTHING only underscores my point. And should be taken as a loud but silent warning.

The most recent lay off stats for March are showing something like 613000. Holy crap! That is just one month. Similar figures have been reported every month since last October. Now I ask you, how long can this continue before we start seeing some ugly things unfold? Patio or roof top gardening will become a crucial skill to develop right away.

Suburban Realities and Getting Prepared

The world is changing. All areas of life are undergoing rapid change. A quick glance at any area of our lives will show this to be true. Many families and individuals know how fast things are in motion. It does not matter if we are talking about the economy, the environment, our health, or simply the "things" that are becoming a priority to us. The immensity of what is occurring is without comparison. If you have begun to take notice of these rapid changes then you are not alone.

As events move quickly it can be difficult to get a grasp on the best course of action for you and your family. There are several things you can do to get ahead of the curve in becoming prepared for the times ahead. [http://the-next-leap.blogspot.com]

Preparing for Chaos in 2012: Emergency Lighting When the Grid Goes Down

Whether you think 2012 will be "just" an economic collapse or "the end of the world as we know it" (TEOTWAWKI) as some fear, you need to have an emergency plan for lighting when the power grid goes down. Perhaps it will be gone altogether or maybe it will just become less reliable, but either way, candles will not cut it in 2012.

Gas Powered Backup Generators Only Help So Much

As brownouts and blackouts have affected more and more people across the nation, there seems to be an increase in the number of people who have emergency backup generators. While this is a good thing, the emergencies won't always be a temporary outage due to weather.

What happens when the power outage is widespread and lasts for days or even weeks? The fuel to run the generator won't be available at gas stations, which require electricity to pump the gas. The gas in your generator and the extra fuel can you have for your lawn mower will be used up within a day or two. Then it will be time for "Plan C."

When the Gas Runs Out

Let's think of the first two days of a power grid failure as 'short term.' Then let's turn our attention to "medium term' - which we would define as between 3 to 14 days. It's a good bet that you have enough candles on hand to light your house for more than a couple days, and besides, they are dangerous if you have kids or pets and not very portable to help you go to the bathroom and do your chores.

The best route for medium term lighting is to use LED flashlights and headlamps. These will last you up to two weeks on the same batteries. They are safe, economical and very portable. Headlamps, which may not win you any fashion awards on any other day, will be a game changer if you are trying to get around in the dark and get anything done. They aren't just for coal miners - backpackers swear by headlamps.

You'll get some great ideas on which LED lights to buy, how to determine the best batteries to use in them, etc. in any good, practical urban survival manual. There are several aspects of lighting and power that most of us will never even think of until after we've been through an extended power failure for ourselves. Learning from the experience of others who've written urban survival manuals is a great way to avoid a very painful learning curve.

What Do We Do For Longer Term Lighting?

If the power is out for a longer period of time, the most practical solution is a small, inexpensive solar panel setup. For a hundred dollars or less, you can get enough light from a solar setup to light an entire room of your house.

The type of lights you need to have is definitely LED, as these bulbs last for ages and they don't use nearly as much power for the same amount of light as incandescent or florescent lights. A very cheap LED rope light will produce a good amount of light and can run off the solar power stored by a small panel for the entire evening until you go to bed. More light than a 100 watt bulb for less power.

There are many skills, which we refer to as "urban survival techniques" to get good at before a major collapse happens. Ensuring your food supply, drinking water and lighting are only three of the skills that will make a major difference in 2012.

To learn about all of the urban survival techniques you will need to get by the tough times ahead, you should consult a practical urban survival manual. You may be surprised at how little preparation it takes to give yourself a great deal of peace of mind.

Shelter-In-Place VS Evacuation for Personal Emergency Planning

When preparing an emergency plan you must consider the differences and merits to both sheltering-in-place and evacuation. Being prepared for both of these scenarios will greatly increase your chance of survival.

What is SIP?

Shelter-in-place is the concepts of taking refuge were you are to weather an emergency situation. There are several schools of thought on SIP planning depending on what the particular emergency is but the most common definition is contingent on the practice of preparing supplies and fortifying your home so it serves as shelter.

What emergencies call for SIP?

Some emergencies like tornados, pandemics minor hurricanes, severe blizzards, and even certain terrorist attacks could require you to take refuge in your home. The list of emergencies that would require you to take shelter in your home is nearly endless but it is important to remember that if your local government or emergency agency asks that you evacuate your home, DO SO!

Evacuation orders are planned and examined over and over by highly trained and qualified safety professionals and these orders are not given out lightly. It is very hard to stress this enough.

What to consider about SIP

Preparing for SIP scenarios is an extremely important practice and must be taken very seriously. Most emergency aid agencies suggest that you stockpile food, water, and medical supplies to last you at least three or four days; this is to tide you over until emergency crews can get to you.

Preparing your supplies is important but do not bind yourself to the three day suggestion. You will be much better served to prepare at least weeks worth of emergency supplies as some disasters, like Hurricane Katrina, can leave you stranded in your home for several days.

What is EVAC?

When your local government or public safety entity calls for an evacuation of an area, as mentioned before, it is important that you head their call. Evacuating, however, is often even more daunting of a challenge that SIP.

What emergencies call for EVAC

Any emergency that would make your home unsafe for occupancy will call for you to evacuate. The list is nearly endless but a few examples are major hurricanes, flooding, and even gas main leaks. Your local government will advise you on what to do.

What you need consider about EVAC?

You should plan on bringing some emergency supplies with you even if you are headed to a shelter. Emergency shelters are often neglected by city planners and government agencies and the resources available at these facilities can be quickly exhausted by a sudden demand. It is important that you bring some supplies, like food, water, and medicine, to sustain yourself.

You also need to make sure that whatever you bring with you can be easily transported on foot and without anyone's assistance. Many evacuations are directed by the local government and require that people are transported on government vehicles so as to not inundate the roadways with evacuees; being able to bring your supplies on a bus or truck will require a very mobile kit.

Don't forget about your pets when evacuating. Many cities are now taking steps to evacuate pets during an emergency, but not all do and you will most likely not be able to bring your pet with you during an evacuation via public transportation. If you have to leave your pets at home, be sure to leave them in a safe place in your home with enough food and water for several days.

Which is better?

Asking whether SIP or EVAC is a better course of action is really dictated by the situation you are facing. You should prepare for either contingency when preparing your emergency supplies and plan for both as each has its own merits.

You should relay on the wisdom of your local government when deciding which course of action to take during an emergency. The government employs professional public safety specialists that have training and experience that will allow them to make the right choice follow their instructions.

When you are preparing for both EVAC and SIP, it is important to remember that you will never be able to prepare for every emergency and trying to do so is not only inefficient but could prove dangerous. Preparing a basic emergency kit is your best course of action and it may, one day, save your life.
