Why Getting in Shape Before Doomsday Is Extremely Important

Have you ever watched that show on National Geographic, "Doomsday Preppers". It is a show about real life people who are preparing to survive the apocalypse. Survival experts rate their preparations and they are given a score based on how likely they are to survive. If you have ever seen this show, you know that a great deal of these "preppers" as they are called, are completely overweight and in absolutely horrendous physical condition. This begs the question, how do these people expect to survive doomsday when they look like they are in need of a quadruple bypass.

People preparing for "the apocalypse" are becoming more and more common because the way things are going in the world. But in their preparations, they often over look the importance of being physically fit. If doomsday really did happen and people were forced to leave their homes to "head for the hills" how many of these super out of shape preppers could actually hack it?

If you are forced to leave your home due to some apocalyptic scenario, you are essentially reduced to a refugee. You will need to wander in search of supplies, resources and food. You will need to hunt and gather and be physically fit enough to plant crops, defend yourself and perform a variety of tasks like chopping fire wood or walking long distances.

Most of the people on this show look like they couldn't run a full mile, let alone blaze a trail out into the wilderness surviving off the land. If you really were going to be serious about "doomsday prepping" wouldn't you consider physical fitness a primary aspect of concern?

Instead of all of their elaborate defenses to protect their home, they should be spending some of that money on a treadmill and getting their bodies as prepared as their defenses. After all, you can't expect to always be at home, you will need to eventually go out in search of supplies no matter how well stocked you are. Walking and running won't be options after your fuel supply runs out and tasks like chopping and splitting wood require a certain degree of physical fitness that would be completely overwhelming to an out of shape "prepper".

Developing a daily workout routine should be a critical aspect of preparing for doomsday, your physical body is your best defense and if you are in horrible shape how could you ever expect to last for any length of time anyway?

So my advice to these doomsday preppers is, spend a little time running on a treadmill everyday and it will benefit you even if doomsday never occurs.

If you are the type of person who has all of the gear you need to survive the apocalypse and you are actively preparing for doomsday, you probably want to invest in a treadmill and some workout equipment to keep your body as prepared for survival as your home. You can get some of the best treadmills for under $500, so their really is no excuse not to add this to your survival repertoire. Stay fit and healthy, body, mind and soul it will benefit you no matter what happens!

Getting in shape for TEOTWAWKI

Health and fitness is not something that most people consider when preparing for the "end of the world as we know it." But you should. People tend to take for granted just how easy we. Until the last century most people throughout history worked from dawn to dusk in the fields and gardens just so you could get enough food to make it again the next day. Nowadays, except for those living in third world countries, food not much of a concern for most people. In fact, most people are more worried about eating too much food! As a result, modern man has become soft, weak and very system dependent. If teotwawki arrives, many people will not have the strength required to keep themselves alive.

Imagine for a moment that the worst has happened-an earthquake, a terrorist attack, WWIII-and you're trying to make your way through the city back to your home. If a group of thugs who wanted to steal it, could you outrun them? If a fence was in your way, you could hop on it? Now imagine you live in an apartment with your children. When you get there, the stairs were destroyed. Could climb the tree next to the building and get through the window? What happens if you get inside and your child's leg is trapped under fallen beam? Could lift out of him? These are just a few examples of physical fitness as it will be very important if disaster strikes.

Obviously if you are older or have a health condition that prevents you from being in good shape, you can only do your best. Get the best that is possible can and will make your life easier. But if you're between the ages of 15 and 50 and healthy, it is up to you to be physically fit so it may help others. When is teotwawki, you have zero excuse.

Cardio: There is a movie called Zombieland on what happens to a group of people after zombie kill off over 99% of the population. The main character has a list of rules that help to keep it alive. Rule number 1 is cardio and. In Zombieland, is so he can run faster than zombies. But if teotwawki, there are many things that you may need to run faster: an invading army, a crowd of people on the run, a gang of criminals, who knows? Whatever happens, do not want legs, lungs and heart to keep you from straying. Start getting at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise 6 days a week.

Strengths: Lifting a fallen beam off of a loved one, is not the only scenario in which you might need some great strength. Might have to carry buckets of water back and forth from a pond, carrying firewood for several miles, move your food and supplies in a safer position, clearing out the debris or even out-wrestle a Bandit. It is not required to become a bodybuilder. In fact, most of your strength training can be done from home with a pair of dumbbells. Not going to recommend a specific exercise routine here, but consider getting a trainer or purchasing a book on strength training.

Flexibility: When you move from sitting in an office chair all day to sneak 24 hours for water and supplies in town, you will discover dozens of joints and muscles do not know that you had. If you do not want to be stiff and in pain when the time comes, then go ahead and start doing some stretching exercises every day. Getting to where touching your toes is a piece of cake. Better yet, take a yoga class. There is no better way to improve flexibility and work out all the small muscles that normally don't get used. Another option is to kill two birds with one stone to improve flexibility and cardio at the same time with sports such as tennis, racquetball, basketball and swimming.

Diet: Don't start to eat less, just start eating healthy! If at the end of the world as we know it arrives, people with lower body fat percentage will die of hunger in the first place. People on the other end of the spectrum, however, will die out because their bodies are unable to handle stress. Ideally, you want to be on the upper end of the normal range in this way have BMI still be in good shape, but they also have a nice little fat to live off of when food is in short supply. Here is an adult bmi calculator. The easiest way to achieve this is to exercise everyday and eat when you're hungry. But when you eat, make sure that it's nothing but fruit, vegetables, lean meats, free fat dairy and whole grain carbohydrates. Avoid anything processed or preservatives. A good rule is to stay on the outer edge of the grocery store and avoid going up and down the Isles.
