Thousands of residents of China's Hunan Province have been watching their homeland sinking into the depths of the earth due to nearly 700 China sinkholes. Nearly a thousand residents are being affected from the sinkholes which are causing damage to buildings and farmlands. The sinkholes appeared over night, causing much concern and feeding the Mayan 2012 prophecy theorist.
The China Government has been busy placing warning signs to warn the local residents of dangerous sinkhole areas.
The Chinese internet has been overloaded with reports of sinkholes appearing in large numbers across China. Many Chinese are seeing these sinkholes as a sign of the apocalypse, or the end of the world. The doomsday rumors are popular within China since the movie 2012 was such a big hit when the film was released last year.
Some locals are questioning the perfection of the circular shape of the holes, declaring that not even humans can make the shapes of the sinkholes so perfectly round. Another local declared that the holes are because God is angry with the earthlings for polluting the earth and the sinkholes are a way to punish them.
Many 2012 conspiracy theorist agree that the China sinkholes are a sign of the end of times, agreeing with the Mayan Prophecy that the world will end in 2012.
To shed some scientific light on the China sinkholes we need to understand what Karst Topography is. Karst Topography relates to the China sinkholes because it describes the ground sediment that a lot of China is built upon. China has a lot of limestone which is easily dissolved by water which forms a karst topography, which is best described as a network of caves, underground channels and a rough ground surface.
These underground caves and tunnels are highly susceptible to collapse from the surface, resulting in some very large sinkholes. Sinkholes can vary in size from a few feet to the giant 300 feet deep Guatemala sinkhole pictured below. These sinkholes including the sinkholes in China have been known to devour homes, businesses and cars. There is a video of a China sinkhole swallowing a school, luckily no one was hurt in that incident.
The alarming issue with the Chinese sinkholes are they all appeared over night, it is not a pattern that Karst type sinkholes appear. We will have to wait until more scientific data is gathered before coming to a reasonable conclusion. There are already rumors spreading that the sinkholes could be caused due to heightened seismic activity in the area; which could be a sign of a major earthquake like China or the world has never felt before.
